A note from coach –
I love each athlete that comes out. Every person that commits to the sport of track and field has opportunities for improvement. Those improvements are measurable and I feel great satisfaction in helping every young athlete see new personal best performances.
Having said that, every day presents me with new challenges in how I spend my time. There is only one of me to go around!
I want my upper classmen to get a fair share of the attention. Especially the ones that have committed to the program for three and four years. I believe they have earned a certain amount of my immediate attention. Their time is running out!
Injuries and general aches and pains also need immediate attention. Often times, kids are going through things they’ve never felt before because of the nature of the sport. It is difficult to determine the line between training and growing pains and the onset of injury.
The lower classmen need to be directed a lot more than upper classmen. The lower classmen don’t have the experience to innately know the next best decision to make. But the lower classmen need to become upper classmen and that is important for the healthy longevity of the program.
Excited kids also tend to get more immediate attention. If little Johnny or Sara have a personal best or have a unique experience on the run, they want to tell me! And I love to hear it!
On goal setting – we need to do it constantly. After the first workout I have with a new athlete, I begin goal setting in my coaching of that athlete. I set short term, quickly attainable goals. Those goals are reached in the next week and month. I also set longer term goals and continue to modify those as the athlete progresses. Long term goals are in terms of months, years, and careers. What’s your goal? I want to know!
I do this for my teams as well. I look at the competition for our meets and other meets around the state. I think about my resources (the wonderful student-athlete). I begin to set goals that are short and long term. I must communicate the goals. How else is a team going to know its direction unless the communication comes from the coach? Everyone has a place in the plans! Don’t worry, do your best!
